Stingray-wave-energy-device-by-CPT-credit-InterMoorColumbia Power Technologies has awarded German giant Siemens a contract to manufacture a direct-drive rotary generator as part of a full-scale power take-off test for its Stingray wave energy device.

The assembly for the Stingray will be trialled at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory in Colorado ahead of any installation and offshore deployment.

The land-based test allows “safe, rapid and economical simulation of the full range of normal and extreme ocean conditions and represents a significant risk-reduction milestone in our commercialisation path”, CPT said.

Elsewhere, the company has been informed its third patent in the US for direct-drive rotary wave energy conversion will be issued later this month. The latest award means CPT will hold six patents worldwide.
