New to OREC in 2019 we will be hosting a series of industry lead workshops that will focus on specific research needs. Attendance at the Workshops is included with registration.

8:00am - 10:00am: Retiring Risk for MRE Projects to Support Permitting

Environmental concerns continue to slow and complicate permitting, resulting in added costs to developers. If certain risks from interactions of MRE devices and marine animals could be put aside (or “retired”) for small developments, the most important risks and uncertain interactions could become the focus of studies and monitoring data collection.

This workshop will present a methodology and provide an example of retiring risk by assessing a key MRE-environmental interaction: effects of underwater noise from MRE devices.

Track A: Making MRE Data Accessible – the PRIMRE System

To advance the development of MRE, data and information should be easily accessible and suitable for sharing, while monitoring and analysis methods should be consistent. Currently, MRE information and data are scattered and not connected to one another. DOE WPTO created PRIMRE to address these issues by providing broad access to engineering, resource characterization, and environmental effects information in support of the MRE industry, as well as facilitating connections among databases and the MRE community. Improving access to information, data, and tools has the potential to accelerate MRE development by reducing duplication efforts and associated costs. This workshop will provide an overview of PRIMRE and the main knowledge hubs that are supported within PRIMRE: MHK DR, Tethys, and Tethys Engineering.

Over the past three years, the project team has been interviewing regulators and developers; collecting qualitative and quantitative data from MHK projects across the U.S and generally from other energy resources (oil and gas, wind, etc.); analyzing quantitative information gathered from these interviews regarding the studies completed, costs incurred, and funding sources during the licensing and permitting process; and developing strategies and actions to help reduce permitting and licensing costs for MHK projects. The project team is excited to share the most recent analysis graphics that incorporates your feedback, the strategies and actions developed over the past year, and next steps for the project. Our hope is to facilitate a constructive discussion around the findings and strategies and actions developed.
